Review - The fault in our stars

The Fault in our stars by John Green

Age range - YA, but everyone should give this book a try

At first I thought the novel revolved around two teenagers who wanted to loose their virginity before they passed away. So of course I thought it would be a teenage love story; a story that would blur into the background of other stories I have read. I had heard about it on the radio a few months ago, the radio programme was disgusted by the book stating it put sex before dying.

However. The Fault in Our Stars is so much more than that and I wish I could remember the radio programme I heard it on as they would get a rather stern talking to from me! I completely fell into each and every word. The novel made me laugh out loud and then; it made me cry.

I finished the book in one sitting. Then once I finished, I put the book down and just sat and thought. Not about their love story, although it is a part of it, Hazel and Augustus live everyday not knowing if it is going to be their last.

They both take risks and throw themselves into life. The kiss in Anne Frank's house for example; at first glance it's disrespectful. Anne Frank is highly regarded and to show a public display of affection in quite a somber environment just seems inconsiderate. However, I thought about this for quite a while. Hazel and Augustus do not know how long they have; they live for the moment and quite obviously the tourists behind them don't seem to mind!

The trip to Holland itself is a risk for Augustus; but he takes it and throws himself into the trip not revealing the sad news until they are due to fly home.

I don't want to use the word favourite here; because it would suggest I enjoyed reading about funerals. But, I thought the pre funeral section was beautifully written. It mixes sadness with joy; and I felt like I was the one who could not accept death and how much more stronger Hazel, Augustus and Isaac were than I.

Please read The Fault in Our Stars; although I do hope you have not ruined it by reading reviews first and keep an eye out for the up coming film! There is a huge cult following regarding John Greens books and it is amazing to be a part of it.
